Our operating standard

Ethical Trucking: The Blue Ridge Standard

Blue Ridge Transportation believes freight transportation should be built around honest relationships, safe operations, professional drivers, responsible business practices, and respect for the communities every shipment travels through.

This page focuses on what that standard means in day-to-day operations. For our broader commitments to people and communities, see our Human Rights & Ethical Transportation policy.

What does ethical trucking mean?

Ethical trucking means making responsible decisions even when the easier decision might be faster, cheaper, or more convenient. It means recognizing that freight transportation connects people — drivers, dispatchers, customers, brokers, shippers, receivers, families, businesses, and communities — not simply warehouses.

We don’t just ask: “Can we move it?”

We also ask: “Can we move it safely, honestly and responsibly?”

The principles behind every mile

The Blue Ridge Standard

  1. 01

    Drivers Matter

Professional Freight Drivers are people — not simply trucks, available hours, or dots on a dispatch screen.

Drivers deserve realistic expectations, safe working conditions, adequate rest, respectful communication, and the ability to raise legitimate safety concerns.

  2. 02

    Safety Before Service

No shipment, appointment, customer relationship, or revenue opportunity is more important than operating safely and lawfully.

When circumstances change — weather, traffic, equipment, fatigue — we communicate and make the safest lawful decision.

  3. 03

    Honest Pricing

Customers should understand what they are paying for: clear rates, transparent accessorial expectations, accurate invoices, and honest conversations when circumstances change.

  4. 04

    Driver Time Has Value

Waiting has a cost. Professional Freight Drivers should not be treated as unlimited free labor while waiting at shipping or receiving facilities.

We document detention accurately and advocate for fair treatment of driver time.

  5. 05

    Honest Communication

We will not knowingly promise what we cannot reasonably deliver. Capacity, transit times, delays, and service problems are communicated honestly. Bad news does not improve by hiding it.

  6. 06

    Freight Integrity

Customers trust carriers with more than freight. We take seriously cargo condition, documentation, chain of custody, bills of lading, and proof of delivery.

  7. 07

    Responsible Dispatching

A good dispatch decision weighs more than whether a truck is technically available — it considers driver hours and wellbeing, weather, route conditions, equipment capabilities, and realistic transit time.

  8. 08

    Responsible Technology

Technology should improve safety and service — not create shortcuts around accountability. We support accurate ELD records, responsible telematics use, and responsible handling of customer and employee information.

  9. 09

    Fair Partnerships

Ethical freight requires cooperation. We seek relationships with customers, brokers, vendors, and carriers who value honest communication, professionalism, safety, and fair dealing.

  10. 10

    Communities Matter

Every highway passes through someone’s home. Our operations should reflect respect for the communities where we travel, stop, load, unload, and conduct business.

A driver’s time has value.

A truck waiting at a dock is not simply equipment sitting still — there is a professional driver inside whose workday, available hours, and next appointment may be affected.

Blue Ridge Transportation documents detention honestly and handles it fairly.

Accountability

Ethics matter most when things don’t go as planned.

Our standards matter most when there is a delay, breakdown, damaged shipment, missed appointment, or mistake. We do not want a culture where employees believe they must hide good-faith mistakes to protect appearances.

  1. STEP 1

    Tell the truth.

  2. STEP 2

    Document what happened.

  3. STEP 3

    Communicate.

  4. STEP 4

    Protect people and property.

  5. STEP 5

    Work toward a solution.

  6. STEP 6

    Learn from it.
